Connemara Mussel Festival

Originally established to promote the excellence of the mussels of Killary Harbour, this festival has grown to become a celebration of local people, food, culture and heritage, and is recognised as the premier food event for Connemara, attracting visitors from near and far.

It runs from Friday May 2nd to Sunday ay 4th

Some of the activities including in this year’s program are:

AMATEUR CHEF COMPETITION (Saturday at 4 pm)

The  mussel cooking competition takes place in the Festival Marquee. The First prize is a Weekend for 2 in the Carlton Blanchardstown Hotel.

GMIT STUDENT CHEF COMPETITION (Saturday at 3 pm)
Student chefs from GMIT’s Culinary School will showcase their skills and compete using a mystery box of locally inspired ingredients. Be warned there could be ANYTHING in those boxes and audience participation will most certainly be required!

WINE AND BEER TASTING EVENT (Saturday at 9 pm)
Join us for a tasting event with a selection of craft beers, specialty wines and artisan cheeses. Accompanied by live music with Richard and Fionnuala. Entry €10. Tickets at door or available from Festival Office.

ARTISAN FESTIVAL MARKET (Saturday and Sunday 10:30 am – 4pm)
Explore the finest food and craft produce from around Ireland at the Festival Market, including Made in Galway range. The market is open to all, free to attend and well worth a visit. Venue: Marian Hall in Tullycross.

ECOLOGICAL SEASHORE WALK (Sunday 3 pm)
Marie Louise Heffernan, consultant at Aster Environmental, leads an ecological seashore walk on the Renvyle Peninsula.
Meet at the White Strand, Renvyle. Bring good walking shoes and rain gear. €5 Limited numbers, tickets from Festival Office.
