A village on your hands

Sure you’ll be thinking of grannys staying all day long indoors making old-fashioned bedding…well, that wouldn’t be too far, just because granny designs and out of style handmade stuff are so in again, fortunately!

Check the International Quilt Festival of Ireland website and you’ll know what I mean. Beautiful samples of colourful quilts made by very different people will make you want to check out this marvellous art. You’ll be surprised how creative those quilts can be. They have a selection of themes for people to choose which one suit them best, or in case you wish to learn how introduce yourself in this art, you’ll find a list of classes for each day, just pick the one that adapts your pocket!

Imagine a village made of quilts, that’s what’s going to happen in the NUI Galway campus this second year of the festival. The largest group of quilts ever seen in Ireland will be shown, but not only from Ireland, as many “quilters” from around the world will help to make the Quilt Village look wonderful.

Just so you also know, volunteers are required to help in the organisation of the festival, it might be a bit late but there’s no harm in checking it out, you’d have the chance to see all the festival for free!

Art and Food at the Claddagh

Something to do on Sunday…that’s not always usual, but this week there’s no excuse to get up and shake out of your head the remaining of last night’s hangover.

How would the arts scene be without the mecenas that promote, give support and organise fairs around the world, specially in Ireland? There is so much Arts and Crafts scene that it’s almost impossible to write all about it in one go. Luckily there’s always good-hearted associations helping them out and spreding the word around. This time is STM Food and Craft, an organisation that runs fairs around Co. Galway.

Beautifully made jewellery, original cute candles, ashtonising wooden pieces, new and cool knitting designs, delicious cakes and bread…anything that is handmade you can think of have a space this Sunday at the Food & Craft Fair. It always gives a good vibration to see that handmade crafts are still alive and kicking now more than ever.

Entrance is free but I wouldn’t go in there with my wallet empty…there will be so much awesome stuff that I’d regret not to have a cent on me, and at the same time giving support to all these  talented artists.

Pandora’s Box, get a new wardrobe for less

ImagenHi Galway fashionistas! Feeling your pockets are more empty each month…? You might have a look to the next Pandora’s Box showroom, a few months old thrift market right in the center of the city. Open to everybody any age, the market offers from old vintage clothes, shoes and little things wich you could recognise from your granny’s wardrobe till handmade crafty stuff that will make you look so unique.

Don’t be shy! Feel free to join us – and your friends – and have a walk around the stalls and maybe have a nice cup of tea. You can get a completely new wardrobe for a few pennies or find that personal gift for someone special.
