Concert at the Town Hall Theatre

Concert at the Town Hall Theatre

The legacy of Mike Diskin will be honoured at a major commemorative concert in the Town Hall Theatre this Sunday, as well as the launch of an artist’s bursary for new and innovative arts projects in the city.

Mike Diskin, the former Town Hall Theatre manager, one of the key figures in the Galway arts scene for more than 20 years, and a champion of original ideas and young talent, passed away in March 2012, after a battle with cancer.

To honour his life and achievement, an independent committee of family and friends have organised the Concert For Mike, which takes place in the Town Hall on Sunday March 30, with all proceeds going towards forming a bursary for new arts projects.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 02, you can go dancing with West Coast Big Band in Massimo’s at 9:30 pm.

The band has been playing in Galway since 2005, and now they play in Massimo’s monthly, the first Tuesday of every month, so if you miss tomorrow’s gig, they’ll be back in August.

They specialise in the performance of big band swing but also perform waltzes and songs from the blues, rock, and pop genres. Among others you can listen Fever, Mustang Sally, The Last Waltz or Copacabana

Here you can listen to a classic I hope they play tomorrow, Sweet Home Chicago:

Body And Soul

This festival is in Ballinlough Castle,  County WestMeath, not too close to Galway, we know, but we think it’s quite interesting so here is all the information about it.

Body & Soul is a three-day festival that takes place annually across a weekend in late June – around one of Ireland’s oldest feasts: Midsummer’s or The Summer Solstice. Starting off as an idea, shaped and coloured by festivals like Burning Man in the Nevada Desert and the age-old art of celebration, Body&Soul carves an alternative world for artists, musicians and like-minded people to get together, to share ideas and stories that result in a unique and indescribable magic – an atmosphere so often lost in generic festivals and productions.

Among other Realms, you can find during day and night:

  • Midnight Circus: Moonlight & Madness
  • Greencrafts: with a craft village that lives and breaths craft as a dynamic and exciting community.

And some the concerts and DJs you can enjoy:

  • NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS (Saturday at 23h)
  • FUCK BUTTONS (Saturday at 1 am)
  • WALLIS BIRD (Sunday at 16 30h)
  • JAMES MURPHY (Friday at 22h)

So, you can see, from electronic music to the personal voice of Nick Cave, all kind of performance to enjoy during the weekend.

Also, important and different, children are very welcome to Body and Soul, you can find a series of Family Friendly Activities, for example the Funky Feet Dance crew; an exciting new Circus School and Ready Steady Balloons; the banging beats of Afro-Irish band Tig Linn; and the ever popular DJ Will Softly presenting the brilliant Soul Kids Disco.

** You can still find tickets here. The weekend ticket is 139 euros. To check all the details for different prices, camping sites, etc, check their great website

The Secret Garden, tea and events

Scroll down for english.

The Second Swap Shop.

I love this place, I can’t deny it.

I like the small tables, the cushions to sit on the floor, the back garden. But of course, the best is their tea. And I think that it has a lot of merit to open a tearoom in Ireland, especially if you want to give a different touch, in this case, simply with all the varieties of teas they offer, when here we just take basic tea with milk. The Secret Garden provides options from Morocco, India and Pakistan, you can drink mate, Rooibos… altogether more than 100 varieties.

There’s also coffee (and very good coffee) and for those having a sweet’tooth a variety of cakes and sweets, but we recommend this little place in William Street now for two of the events they prepare for this month of June.

Monday 17th, at 18h:

The Second Swap Shop. Exchange your items for other people’s. Clothes, shoes, bags, books, whatever you want, whenever they are in good condition. Admission is 3 euros and instructions can be seen on the Facebook page of The Secret Garden.

Wednesday 19th, at 20h:

Five Yoga & Meditation practitioners have formed the band Inis and will be playing a mix of mantras and spiritual folk music (Irish and the rest of the world) until 22h

You can also enjoy live music and DJs on the weekends, and remember: it is open until 11 pm!

The Secret Garden is on 4 William Street West

By now you can only pay in cash
