The Big Gig to help fund ATLANTIC

‘Atlantic’ is a feature documentary following the fortunes of fishing communities across the North Atlantic affected by the huge increase in oil activity off their coasts.

On both sides of the Atlantic, oil and gas frontiers are opening up, pushing deeper in to the Atlantic and further north into the Arctic. Coastal communities in Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland are facing the dilemma choosing between traditional fishing and more lucrative oil and gas income.

This project is being financed with individual contributions (they have already around 14.000 €) and to support the production of the film a series of events are taking place in Galway and Dublin. Here, this Wednesday, May 28th in Monroe’s, from 8:30 pm, we can enjoy a fundraising concert.

Tickets are 10 euros and you can listen to 4 bands:

  • Mikey & The Scallywags,
  • My Fellow Sponges,
  • The Deans
  • We Banjo Three

Listen to some of the songs they will be playing and  if you want to cooperate now, please visit the website of the project:

Galway Flood Benefit

We have found this information in The Townhouse Bar website explaining their change of plans due to the last flooding. This can be a great night of music and a way to help:

Hi folks, As some of you will know we were supposed to host the beautiful Rachel Sermanni on Saturday March 1st, obviously due to the damage here we have had to switch venues. We have taken the opportunity to create a benefit night for families affected by the flooding around Galway.

The venue has changed to The Galway Rowing club. Rachel Sermanni will still perform along with The Voice Squad, Peadar King, Mo Kenny, Mikey & the Scallywags and My Fellow Sponges. All acts will perform acoustically. It will be a fabulous night of music.

Tickets (14 euros) are available here Rachel tickets purchased will remain valid for the entire event.

All money raised will go to the Red Cross, who seem to be the only real time help for families across Galway and around the country, in need of help.

Thank you to all of the artists, to the businesses on Quay street who have contributed prizes for raffles, sound, lighting, staging, printing, accommodation and The Rowing Club who have given us the venue.

Mid week plans

No need to wait until the weekend to listen to some good music in Galway. Here you have 3 options for Tuesday and Wednesday:

  • Tonight, in the Electric Garden, ‘Pumped Up Kicks‘ tonight with the very Ms Louise Clarke and Graham Doherty – playing choice indie and rock cuts.

  • My Fellow Sponges, Steven Sharpe and Dylan Murphy will be playing in The Cellar Bar (Eglinton Street) this Wednesday February 12th, from 21 30. Free admission. Steven Sharpe is also the front man for Led Zeppelin cover band “No Stairway” and runs “Gingerbeard House” with comedian Steve Bennett.

Rock on!
